More than half of customer enquiries arrive after hours

Founder, Sabiya
Updated · 6 min read

Across 575 real customer conversations on four Australian business websites and social pages, 56% started outside weekday business hours. More than one in five came on a weekend or public holiday, and one in six arrived between 10pm and 6am. Those after-hours enquiries were nearly as likely to turn into a lead or booking as daytime ones.

What did we measure?

We looked at every customer conversation with Sabiya's assistant on four NSW businesses between March and October 2026: an online store, a health and beauty clinic, an automotive service business and a martial arts gym. Conversations came through website chat, Instagram and Messenger.

  • Business hours means 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday. Weekends and NSW public holidays count as after hours.
  • Enquiries are conversations where the visitor sent at least one real message. We removed suppliers pitching to the business.
  • Leads and bookings are conversations where the visitor left their details or clicked through to book.
  • Times are in the business's local time. Results are shown as percentages only.

When do customers get in touch?

More often when you're closed than when you're open. 56% of enquiries arrived outside weekday business hours.

When the enquiry arrived (share of 575 enquiries)
Weekdays, 9am–5pm44%
Weekdays, before 9am or after 5pm34%
Weekends and public holidays22%

Nearly a third (32%) arrived between 6pm and 6am, and 16% between 10pm and 6am. These aren't idle browsers: people ask about prices, book appointments and chase orders late at night, because that's when they finally have time.

Using real opening hours instead of a standard 9–5 doesn't change the picture much. One business opens Saturday mornings and from 8am on weekdays, and 55% of its enquiries still came while it was closed.

It isn't just a pattern in our data. On Google, Australians' top "after hours" searches are for GPs, doctors, clinics and vets (Google Trends, past 12 months). People go looking for help when businesses are closed.

Do after-hours enquiries turn into customers?

Nearly as often as daytime ones. 29% of after-hours enquiries became a lead or booking, compared with 32% during business hours. Because there are more of them, 54% of all leads and bookings started outside business hours.

If nobody answers until the next morning, that's the half of your pipeline most likely to go cold, or to try the next business that does reply.

Sabiya's assistant answers questions and takes bookings on your website, Instagram and Messenger while you're closed, so these enquiries get a reply straight away.

What do people ask after hours?

Mostly the same things as during the day. Price came up in about four in ten conversations overall, and within each business the mix of questions (price, booking, which option fits, hours and location, orders) barely changed between day and night.

The difference is in what people are ready to do. At one service business, daytime visitors mostly asked which option suited them. After hours, more of them wanted to lock in a time: book a repair, a rotation, a service. When you're closed, people stop researching and start trying to book.

By day, people asked which option suited them. After hours, they asked to book.

— The night-time shift at one service business

That was the one clear exception. Everywhere else, people asked the same questions at 10pm as at 10am. They just couldn't get an answer from a person.

Who else is messaging you at night?

Suppliers. 7% of after-hours conversations were businesses pitching their own services: manufacturing, marketing, software. During business hours, the figure was zero.

At one business, one in four after-hours chats was a sales pitch. Call it the morning inbox tax: before your team gets to the customers who messaged overnight, they have to wade through people trying to sell to them.

Does the type of business matter?

Yes, but every business we looked at got a big share after hours. Across the four, the after-hours share ranged from 46% to 65%.

The online store had the lowest share. The gym and the automotive service business had the highest, which makes sense: their customers are often at work during the day and sorting out personal jobs at night and on weekends.

Social messages matter more for some businesses than others. At one, about a quarter of genuine enquiries came through Instagram or Messenger rather than the website.

What should you do about it?

You don't need to answer the phone at midnight. You need the most common questions answered and a way to book while you're closed.

  1. Check your own pattern → see how much of your pipeline arrives after 5pm.
  2. Answer the big questions on the page (prices or a starting price, services, hours, location) → people get what they need without waiting for a reply.
  3. Let people book any time → catch the one in six who gets in touch between 10pm and 6am.
  4. Cover DMs as well as the website → at one business, about a quarter of enquiries came through Instagram and Messenger.
  5. Filter out supplier pitches → your team's first hour goes to customers, not the morning inbox tax.
  6. Set a morning routine → overnight enquiries get answered first, while they're still warm.

How reliable is this data?

It's a small sample and we'd rather say so. It covers four businesses in NSW, mostly between June and October 2026, and doesn't include a Christmas period. Each business is a different industry, so we can't yet say what's typical for dental clinics or trades specifically. We'll update this report as more businesses and months come in.

Closing over the holidays? Our Christmas closure guide has message templates and a checklist for catching enquiries while you're away.
